Frequently Asked Question

Aspirants with a primary medical qualification are eligible to apply for the MRCPsych Paper A.

Application for the MRCPsych Part A is made through the Royal College website itself, from the candidate’s registered online account. 

  • Go to the RCPsych official website. 
  • Register for an online account, using your personal details, as well as credentials
  • Select the exam to apply for
  • Make a payment using a card or other payment method

The Royal College allows only a limited number of attempts per paper for each candidate. For the MRCPsych Part A this is a maximum of six attempts. 

Yes. Once a candidate has cleared Paper A, they have only six years to complete the entire certification, down to the MRCPsych CASC.

Yes. However, refunds are subject to RCPsych guidelines. Usually this means that for cancellations made post the application closing date will get no refunds. 

Yes. Although our courses cater to a vast swathe of audience, candidates can also take our MRCPsychsych training course in India as all our courses are also available online.

What is MRCPsych?

MRCPsych (Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists) is a globally recognised postgraduate qualification awarded by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK. It is designed for doctors pursuing specialist training and career advancement in psychiatry. The examination assesses a candidate’s understanding of psychiatric theory, clinical application, communication skills, and evidence-based mental healthcare practice.

Eligibility

Aspirants with a primary medical qualification can apply for the MRCPsych Paper A, subject to the below given criteria.

  • Doctors in an approved training programme
  • Doctors in the UK who are not in an approved training programme
  • Doctors from the EU who are working or have worked Overseas
  • Non-EU doctors who are working or have worked Overseas

Exam Structure

MRCPsych Paper A is designed to assess the scientific and theoretical foundations relevant to psychiatric practice. Conducted as a computer-based examination, the paper consists of 150 questions to be completed within 3 hours. The exam includes approximately two-thirds Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and one-third Extended Matching Item (EMI) questions. Each question carries one mark, and there is no negative marking. The examination evaluates core areas including neuroscience, psychopharmacology, psychology, human development, and psychopathology.

Booking Guidelines

Booking the MRCPsych Paper A exam is a structured process managed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

  1. Create an RCPsych Account
    All candidates must create an online Royal College of Psychiatrists account before applying for the examination.
  2. Check Eligibility
    Candidates must hold a recognised primary medical qualification and meet the eligibility requirements before booking.
  3. Apply for the Exam
    Applications must be submitted during the official application window announced by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  4. Choose Exam Centre / Online Delivery
    Candidates can select available Pearson VUE test centres or choose online delivery where available.
  5. Payment
    Exam fees must be paid online at the time of application confirmation.
  6. Important Notes
    MRCPsych Paper A examinations are conducted multiple times each year. Candidates are advised to regularly check official exam calendars, application deadlines, and booking updates published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
